Should I go on a retreat alone or with a friend?

Here we look at the benefits of going alone vs going with a friend. It certainly depends on what you want and how you want to experience the retreat, but hopefully, these points below will give you some food for thought.

When we run our retreats often we get asked by our clients if they should come alone or with a friend. Hence the main reason for writing this blog, and thus making it easier for you to decide if you want to come alone or with someone. We’ve prepared a short table below listing the benefits of both sides. Regardless, if you come alone or with someone, you will have a great time at our retreats – just see our testimonials on the homepage.

Benefits of attending a retreat alone or with someone else
Benefits of Attending a Retreat by yourself or with a friend

And of course don’t forget that the reverse of those benefits are the drawbacks of coming alone or with someone, which you can work out from those benefits listed above. With that said, we try to make you feel comfortable and at home whether you come alone or with someone ensuring that you make the most of your retreat/event experience with us here at Ganga Flow. As always, we encourage you to get in touch with us before the event to ask us any questions you have, and it will be our pleasure to help you out.

So, if you are ready to attend your first retreat check out our upcoming events here and read about how you can prepare for your first retreat here.

Why mental health awareness and “movement” is important! #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

This year, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is movement. At Ganga Flow, we place huge importance on movement whenever you can, wherever you can. It not only helps energy and endorphins to flow through your body but also helps improve the overall wellness of your body, better mental health, and higher cognitive function.

It is Mental Health Awareness Week this week. Why is it important I hear you ask… Mental health is not something always easily visible to us (or that we see or think of others). Some are unable to talk about it, some are unable to seek help and some are not in a good place, but they don’t know it. That is why it is so important to raise awareness about mental health. it helps break down stigmas and encourages individuals to seek help when needed. By raising awareness, we can foster understanding, empathy, and support for those struggling with mental health issues, ultimately leading to earlier intervention, improved treatment outcomes, and a healthier society overall.

One of the biggest barriers to doing this is your mental state; your attitude, your willpower, and your current status of ‘being’. What we find that helps to get over this is to break things down into smaller, more achievable goals. For example, rather than trying to do a full yoga class or to go out for a 5km walk after work in the first instance which could look daunting, try simply doing 60 seconds of movement. So this could be literally as simple as just limbering up, jumping around, and shaking your body. There, you have taken the first step into making changes, getting your mind into the right place, and making that “first step” (initial action). It is ACTIONS that matter, not ‘just planning’ (and then nothing coming out of it).

I know that as the old saying goes, “It’s always easier said than done”. But I truly believe starting with these small changes, small goals, and small wins will help you get to your bigger goals and objectives. Think about it this way, when we were kids we were always running around, doing something, jumping up and down, and we never felt any problems (putting age aside for a moment). So let’s be like kids again, start to enjoy our lives more, and bring that energy and movement back into our lives.

All in all, having a physically better-tuned body will ultimately help with your mood and your mental state. To put it simply, if you are in pain or you are unable to do a small physical task without any problem, you are not going to be smiling.

So if it’s just a short walk, just a couple of minutes of stretching, or whatever movement that you could do, please make it happen. Your current self and your future self will be much happier and much healthier as a result.

So keep moving everyone.

PS: It is also important to be aware and considerate of what others might be going through, and wherever you can try to be there for those who need it, and try to support those who need it. #mentalheatlthawareness #mentalhealthmatters

What is hypopressives, and why is it important?

Below we will see what hypopressive exercises are and why learning and practicing this type of exercise is important. It is a session that we always have at our 3-day retreats here at Ganga Flow to help our clients. Many of them have not tried it before, but really appreciated having experienced it at our retreats.

Hipopresivos session at the last Ganga Flow Retreat

What is hypopressive abdominal gymnastics?

Hypopressive exercises consist of postures and movements that aim to reduce pressure in the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities while strengthening the muscles of the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Objectives of the therapy

Hypopressive gymnastics exercises lead to a long-term modification of the body’s structure (normalising muscular tensions), respiratory and emotional structure. It also improves postural correction, toning of the abdominal girdle and perineum, reducing the hyperpressure that causes urinary incontinence and prolapse.

Who is it for?

All types of people (except pregnant women and people with hypertension) in the treatment or prevention of:

  • Postural dysfunctions (low back pain, back pain, scoliosis…).
  • Urinary dysfunctions (urinary incontinence).
  • Gastroenterological dysfunctions (gastroesophageal reflux, constipation).
  • Postpartum in the medium term, from the third month after birth (improvement of abdominal diastasis).
  • Vascular drainage of the lower limbs and pelvis (pelvic pain, prevention of varicose veins)
  • Activation of the abdominal girdle and the perineum (basic treatment of urogynaecological and anorectal dysfunctions).
  • Normalisation of the tensions of the muscles of the posterior chain (better mobility and reduction of the risks of arthralgia and osteoarthritis).
It can help everyone to strengthen the core, improve posture, and reduce the risk of pelvic floor problems.

If you would like to try out hipopresivos, come talk to us and you can join us at the next retreat.

Where to find free or cheap wellness sessions

Have you found exercise classes or your gym too expensive? Does it feel like it costs you a lot to stay healthy and active?! Do you want to try all these different types of classes before you pay for something?! Unsure of which class is for your liking?! Fear not, we have your back. Here are some places to help you find some free or cheap wellness classes in Europe (with some examples from Valencia).

  • Sites like Eventbrite (eg: events in VLC), Time Out (Eg: Barcelona what’s on)
  • Instagram accounts like HelloValencia, our friends Valencia Travel. Look for your local area’s “things to do”, “tourism accounts”, and official council accounts.
  • Facebook groups (Simply search for wellness / activity groups and join them)
  • Local newspaper
  • Local council/communities (the local councils often run free events, so check their websites and local notice boards)

And finally, go and ask places for a free pass to try things out. Some places would offer you a free pass to go and try their classes. “If you don’t ask, you won’t get it!”
We often offer free classes at Ganga Flow as we believe in helping people and communities, and we will continue to do so. Take a look at our free events page for our upcoming free events and sessions.

Wellness planning

10 steps to help improve your mental and physical well-being.

Whilst it’s always easy to just go for a walk, or a yoga class here and there, or a bike ride once in a while, it’s best to have a clear plan that can help improve your mental and physical well-being. Being purposeful with your exercise will help you achieve your goals whatever that might be.

Here we look at ten things that can help you in making your mental and physical well-being better through planning and goal setting. This ranges from clearly establishing your goals to having a measurement plan to getting support from someone to help you on this journey. We hope this helps you in achieving your wellness & well-being goals.

Improve your mental and physical well-being by following these steps

We hope these steps help you in your wellness and well-being journey, and help achieve your goals. But remember, this is a dynamic process and you have to keep learning from this, listen to your body and mind, take feedback from your support circle, and keep building on it. If you have any questions you can always get in touch with the team here at Ganga Flow Wellness. Let’s go!

Principles of Pilates

As with anything in life, it is important to understand the fundamentals and the principles of why and how we do something. When you have this idea, it helps you to maximise the impact and enjoy it fully. When it comes to Pilates it’s no different. As part of the Pilates Week with Ganga Flow Wellness, we are looking at all things Pilates this week and these principles are a very important part of it.

When I teach at the Ganga Flow Retreats or my classes at Talens Pilates, I always ensure that we focus on the below points. The starting point, your objective, is of utmost importance and the rest will come to you with practice, and with your teacher’s guidance.

  • Clear objective: All of the below comes together to achieve your ultimate objective, which is why you have embarked on this journey with Pilates / or any other exercise for that matter. Set a clear and achievable objective before you start.
  • Concentration: Focus on the task at hand and engage the mind-body connection.
  • Control: Move with precision, control, and fluidity, maintaining stability and alignment throughout each exercise.
  • Centering: Emphasis on the core muscles to support the spine and improve overall body alignment.
  • Breath: Deep, diaphragmatic breathing to increase oxygenation, focus, and relaxation.
  • Precision: Perform each movement with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Flow: Smooth transitions between movements, creating a sense of rhythm and continuity.
  • Alignment: Proper alignment of the body to reduce strain on joints and muscles, and promote optimal movement patterns.

These principles are integrated into each Pilates exercise, and form the foundation for a safe, effective, and holistic approach to physical fitness. I will be organising a free beginner’s pilates class this weekend and you can sign up for it on the homepage. Otherwise, stay tuned for our online classes, other free classes, or the next retreats to come to try out Pilates.

Pilates

What is Pilates, and a brief history

I have been always fascinated by Pilates and how it can help your physical as well as mental well-being. I’ve now been teaching Pilates for more than 14 years.  How much of a change I can make in people’s lives and the positive impact I can have on them has kept me wanting to do more. Many of you may have tried Yoga and other exercises, but Pilates is one that most people have heard of, but not tried before. For example, many of our community from our wellness retreats have never tried it before until they did so with us on our retreats. So let’s look at what Pilates is and where it all started.

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall body alignment and control through a series of controlled movements and breathing techniques. This is done with and without equipment to work various parts of these muscles. I personally love working with the Pilates Reformer the most.

A Brief History

So where did it all begin? Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. As a child, he suffered from asthma and various health problems, which led him to study various forms of exercise and develop his own system of physical fitness. He called his approach “Contrology” and began teaching it to dancers and athletes in Europe. In the 1920s, Pilates emigrated to the United States and opened a studio in New York City, where his method gained popularity among dancers and later, the general public. Today, Pilates is a widely practiced form of exercise with many variations and adaptations.

This week, we will be doing a lot of activities, sharing of information, and competitions to help you understand Pilates, get the most out of it, and also try it for free with Ganga Flow. In the next few articles, we will share a beginner’s guide to Pilates, its main benefits, and much more. If you have any questions, you can get in touch with me through the Ganga Flow Instagram account.

Why is it important to disconnect and how a retreat can help you with that?

Our lives seem to be getting busier and busier. It feels like we’ve done a month’s worth of work in a week or two. Everywhere we look now is a screen. When I  was young and if I felt bored, I would take the phone and call a friend for hours or go for a walk or a bike ride… Or sometimes just even sit there and look at the trees and the birds. How times have changed, just in the matter of a couple of decades. The world is only going to get more digital, always on and getting us to work harder than ever before. So taking time off to disconnect from the usual routine is hugely important for our mental and physical wellbeing.

However, disconnecting is not that simple anymore just to take an hour or two here and there. That’s where a retreat can help you. Taking that time to disconnect and go on a retreat can be beneficial for several reasons, including reducing stress / anxiety, giving you clarity, a chance to unwind and relax as well as many other things. Here we look at a few reasons why you should disconnect and why a retreat can specifically help you with that.

Reducing stress and anxiety: This is one of the biggest reasons that affect our health and wellbeing. It’s sad to see that this has become commonplace in our lives now and so many of our friends, colleagues and family have experienced it. Stepping away from everyday responsibilities and distractions can help you calm your mind and reduce stress and anxiety levels. Going to a retreat can help you find inner peace and clarity.

Improving mental clarity and focus: When you disconnect from technology and other distractions, you create an environment that is conducive to introspection and self-reflection. People’s attention spans have declined massively and from the time we wake up and we go to bed, we are always connected to a device (especially in the big cities). With the abundance of information and ease of access our attention spans decline as well as the ability to stay focused. This recent study by The Technical University of Denmark highlighted this trend of decreasing attention spans. This can help you gain clarity and focus, and allow you to think deeply about your life and priorities.

Enhancing creativity: Going to a retreat can help stimulate your creativity and inspire new ideas. You’ll have the time and space to reflect and explore your thoughts and emotions, which can lead to breakthroughs and innovative thinking. Many retreats do even focus on creative workshops or planning sessions. At Ganga Flow we also run similar sessions to help unlock your creativity, your thoughts / ideas and help you plan towards your goals.

Strengthening relationships: Going on a retreat with friends, family, or colleagues can help strengthen your relationships. Being in a new environment and sharing new experiences can help you build stronger bonds and deepen connections. And it’s a really fun thing to do. From our experience both personally going to retreats as well as hosting retreats, we see that this is a great way to help strengthen relationships. Think about it this way, with new people or with people from your existing relationships (friends, colleagues or family), making memories, experiencing things together or trying things together helps connect at different levels and gives you the chance to have those shared experiences. That helps build and strengthen your relationships.

Promoting physical well-being: This point is a no-brainer. Many retreats offer activities like yoga, meditation, and hiking, which can improve physical health and well-being. Our upcoming retreats also have cycling, paddle boarding and even cooking. These activities can also help you develop a healthy routine that you can continue even after the retreat. This also gives you a chance to try some new activities that you haven’t tried before, work on areas of the body that haven’t been worked on much before. Retreats can offer you a chance to really kick start your physical wellbeing if you need that or simply build on what you are already doing if you are already on a well balanced fitness journey. At Ganga Flow, all our sessions are led by experienced instructors that have lived in many countries, so you get a truly unique experience.

And finally, community and fun: We have touched upon this slightly earlier, but one of the main things for me, personally, is about making new connections and being part of a community that shares common interests, that supports each other and one that can inspire you. Having been to many retreats and having hosted quite a few retreats, I can honestly say that this is one of the most beautiful parts of a retreat and one that truly helps you disconnect from your daily routine and all the other things that are going on in your life. Not only that, it helps you to look at your life in a different way based on how others in the community would look at things. And last but certainly not least, it’s so much fun. I have always had so much fun going to a retreat, so it’s not only about just helping you disconnect, but also having a lot of fun whilst achieving that.

Overall, going on a retreat can help you disconnect from the stress and distractions of daily life, gain clarity and focus, enhance your creativity, strengthen relationships, promote physical well-being and help you form a supportive community around you.

When you come to our retreats at Ganga Flow, you can simply put your devices away, forget about everything else that’s going on, meet some new and wonderful people, share your stories, try some new activities run by a great bunch of teachers and completely disconnect. We look forward to having you at one of our upcoming retreats.

What kind of retreat is for you?

Like with most things in life, wellness retreats also come in all shapes and sizes. It could be a week long retreat to a one day retreat or it could be a yoga retreat to a dance retreat or it could be a silent retreat to a community retreat or it could be a luxury retreat to a basic retreat. So how can you figure out what type of retreat is the best one for you? Here are 5 things that will help you decide which retreat is the one for you.

1 What are your objectives for a retreat?

First of all, you need to ask yourself what you would like to get out of a retreat. Whether it’s about disconnecting, improving your health / fitness, mindfulness, to meet people or to become your best-self. Once you are clear on your objective it’s much easier to decide which retreat for you based on the programme.

2 What are your goals for this year and how can a retreat help you with that?

Linked to the above point, think about how a retreat can help you in your longer term goals and objectives. For example, you might want to go to a dance retreat to increase your fitness in the shorter term, but you might want to go to a meditation and goals based retreat to help set out a more longer term wellness plan for yourself. So it’s very important that you understand the difference between your short term goals (i.e. one retreat this weekend to disconnect from everything) versus your longer term goals.

3 How far are you willing to go and how much time?

These two points are quite important. 1) Not all retreats will be near where you live. So you need to think about how far you are willing to go and the costs associated with it. 2) How much time you can spend at the retreat. It could be a week long retreat or a day long one. Think about this and then pick the best one for you. At Ganga Flow we always offer half day or one day passes (as well as a single session only passes), so everyone can join despite the time challenges.

4 Can you find out more information about the retreat, the teachers and attendees?

Understanding more about the retreat, the organisers (how they run the retreats – check out their social accounts), the instructors and even a bit more about who’s attending as this will ultimately affect your experience at the retreat. At Ganga Flow Wellness, we always welcome you to talk to us prior to signing up, so you feel more comfortable that it’s the right retreat for you.

5 Finally, how much money do you want to spend on a retreat?

Ultimately, it comes down to this… But it’s not just the amount you pay that should be considered here for what you are getting, it should also be about how much does that value to you in achieving your goals you set up earlier. Once you look at a few retreats you can easily get an idea about the value you get from it monetarily, but the one that you should consider most is that latter point and what it means to you.

Summary:

We hope the above point can help you be more informed when deciding what retreat is for you. This is not an exhaustive list, but some key points we think that you should consider in your decision making process.

At Ganga Flow Wellness, our ultimate goal is to help you achieve your goal(s) by having a great experience at our retreats. We always encourage you to talk to our team before you make a booking to find out if that’s the right retreat for you and work out how we can help you on your journey. But as always, do your own research and see who can help you with this. As always you can talk to us here – if you have any questions.

What are wellness retreats and why should you care?

Your friend talks about going to these wellness retreats for a day, for a weekend, for a week. They come back and talk about these incredible experiences, the connections they’ve made, what they’ve found out about themselves… but you are not quite sure  what all the fuss is all about.

So what is a wellness retreat?

A wellness retreat is a type of retreat or vacation that focuses on promoting overall health and wellness. These types of retreats can take many forms, but often include activities such as yoga, meditation, healthy eating, massage, and fitness classes, among others. The goal of a wellness retreat is to provide attendees with a supportive and nourishing environment where they can take time away from the stresses of daily life and focus on their physical, mental, and emotional health. Some wellness retreats are held at luxury spa resorts, while others are more rustic and focused on adventure and nature. Regardless of the setting, a wellness retreat is designed to help attendees improve their overall sense of well-being and return home feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Going to a wellness retreat can have several benefits including:

Relaxation and stress relief: A wellness retreat provides a serene environment to help you unwind, reduce stress and find inner peace.

Improved physical health: Many wellness retreats offer activities like yoga, meditation, and fitness classes that can help improve physical health and well-being.

Personal growth and self-discovery: Spending time away from the distractions of daily life can provide an opportunity for introspection, personal growth, and self-discovery.

Increased mindfulness: Wellness retreats often incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation and yoga, which can help increase awareness, focus and reduce anxiety.

Connecting with others: Wellness retreats offer an opportunity to connect with others who share similar interests and goals, which can help build meaningful relationships and a supportive community.

Summary:

We hope this article gives you a feel for what wellness retreats are and how it can help you in your personal growth, mindfulness and well-being.
